double bellA joint concert with Friary Brass Band.

In a first-ever concert of it's kindin Surrey, the symphonic brass ensemble Surrey Brass joins forces with Friary Brass Band, Guildford's Championship British Brass Band, to bring you Double Brass.

Bringing together two of the finest brass groups in the county of Surrey, UK, this promises to be an event every brass music enthusiast will want to attend.

Surrey Brass will be conducted by . Friary Band will be conducted by Nigel Taken.

Whilst both groups feature brass instruments, the sound we make and the musical repertoire we play are completely different, injecting tremendous variety into the musical soundscape. Surrey Brass play traditional orchestral brass instruments, whilst Brass Band instruments which were invented by Adolphe Sax in the 19th century.

Tonight's programme includes some truly impressive music, no more so than Leos Janacek's epic  "Sinfonietta" which has been specially arranged for the combined performers tonight. The Sinfonietta (subtitled "Military Sinfonietta" or "Sokol Festival") from 1926 is a late work for large orchestra (of which 25 are brass players) by the Czech composer Leoš Janáček. It is dedicated "To the Czechoslovak Army" and Janáček said it was intended to express "contemporary free man, his spiritual beauty and joy, his strength, courage and determination to fight for victory".

In complete contrast is another favourite: "The Banks of Green Willow" composed in 1913 by British composer George Butterworth, a tranquil orchestral piece, arranged specially for brass by Jonathan Spencer. It features several folk songs cleverly woven together to create a pastoral scene.

Jazz also appears on the programme in the shape of the hit song "Memories of You" by Eubie Blake, made famous by British bandleader Ted Heath, and featuring soloists from Surrey Brass, again in a special arrangement.

And there is so much more to enjoy!

This concert will have a licensed bar at the interval.
