Carols by Candlelight

Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th December 2023

Landmark Arts Centre, Ferry Road, Teddington, TW11 9NN

Music and Storytelling for the whole family

Mark the Christmas Season in the Gothic Cathedral splendour of the Landmark Arts Centre in a family-oriented celebration programme of innovative and traditional music.

Our ever-popular festive start to Christmas week, with a programme of carols and other seasonal music cemented together by a unique story, created on the spot to weave the themes, words and music into a moving narrative ending with a moving message to make you think. Because these concerts have high audience demand, we will deliver TWO wonderful shows in 2023.

On Saturday, the performance begins at 7:30 with performers Surrey Brass, the Junior Chamber Choir of St. George's College, our wonderful storyteller Giles Abbott, and YOU!

On Sunday, we present a slightly different range of performers, including Surrey Brass and Storyteller Giles. And, to make it more accessible for younger members of the audience, that concert starts earlier at 3:45pm.

We are currently in discussions with a fantastic choir and expect they soon will confirm their ability to join us to provide the essential vocal power for this concert.

The programme will be conducted by and others.

Mulled wine and Mince Pies will be on sale at the interval to complete the occasion.

MUSICAL PROGRAMME - PROVISIONAL

Surrey Brass and friends present a delightful confection of traditional Christmas music with music from far away, from long ago and from last week, woven together with a story you have never heard before.

The cornerstones of the programme are of course the traditional Christmas Carols, something everyone can enjoy. With a large audience and a fantastic acoustic in the Landmark they always sound magnificent!

Surrey Brass features a mix of music specially arranged for this occasion. Stand by to find out what it is for 2023. Definitely living up to the Surrey Brass motto of "the innovative and entertaining brass ensemble". We will also perform "Christmas!", a foot-tapping medley of seasonal tunes from all over the world.

Hearing the voices of the Children's Choir at Christmastime is always immensely inspiring and it's so impressive to hear a young choir performing to a high standard will skill and enthusiasm.

We are really excited about the adult choir and will announce more details as soon as we can.

But the real treat of the night is the Christmas Story that is improvised on the spot by Giles Abbott, cleverly weaving in the pieces in the programme with a traditional folk tale from long ago and far away, always ending in a twist in the tale that will make you gasp.

This is the twentieth year of Carols By Candlelight and together with your singing, we are determined to make this occasion our best yet!

A brief history

Our magnificent building was constructed in the 1880s as the church of St Alban The Martyr. Originally designed for a congregation of 1200, by the 1970s it was declared redundant and was neglected for many years. A passionate campaign led by local people eventually succeeded in saving it from demolition and in 1995 it became the home of a new community art centre – the Landmark Arts Centre. Today the facilities are modern and extensive, creating a multi-use arts venue of major significance in South West London.
