Hywel Walters – Bass Trombone

Hywel joined Surrey Brass in September 2018, shortly before the 90th birthday concert for long-term collaborator and arranger, Bill Geldard.

Like many brass players, Hywel began learning at school – rising through the ranks of youth music in Staffordshire and then Kent. Having played with the National Youth Wind Orchestra of GB and the Rehearsal Orchestra in the mid-1980s, Hywel pursued construction as a career, keeping his music as a very enthusiastic hobby. This led to experiencing a wide range of ensembles including brass bands and jazz orchestras.

In the 90s, having lived in Russia for a few years and not played at all, Hywel settled in Staines, studied at the Royal College of Music and attained his ARCM with Peter Harvey in 1998.

Following this, Hywel has continued in construction, bringing up three boys with his wife Irina, who is also a musician (having met on a music tour in 1990). He has enjoyed playing and touring with many different music ensembles in and around London.

The particular allure of symphonic brass playing is that there is no hiding place, and the excitement and reward is far different from other bands.

Hywel’s other hobbies include hill walking and scuba diving.
